The God of Small Things Portfolio Project
Arundhati Roy's debut novel, The God of Small Things takes place in Ayemenem, India during the
1969-1993. It focuses around the two
main characters named Rahel and Estha who are fraternal twins. Rahel has just returned from Calcutta to be reunited with Estha and her family. The two experience painful events such as
Sophie Mol’s death and ongoing tragic events after this one.
The novel illustrates society's Love Laws and
how the "small things" in their community shape the decisions and behaviors that
occur. The motif of Rahel’s watch showed
the timelessness of the book and how time was frozen in order to emphasize that
the year or days around Sophie Mol’s death was all that mattered. Some
of the major conflicts that are presented include: forbidden love, caste system, politics,
and Indian history.
This site will
include the author’s background, logs of our group discussion, artwork, an essay, thematic analysis, character analysis, important
quotes, research, and a mysterious movie trailer. The God of Small Things is a complex and beautiful story that will detail the stories of Estha, Rahel, Velutha, and others who endure both big and small events that all tie together in the end.
